I guess I've learned if someone is a good sportswriter for a newspaper that doesn't make them a good author. I could have written this book. Passages jump forward and back causing the reader to wonder if the author was awake when he was writing this. Book really could have used a professional proof reader. I'd recommend it to any leaf fan of old because there aren't enough books dealing with such a subject manner. If there was one that existed it would have to be better than this. Anecdotes are far too sterilized at times too.

There have been many tales to spring up regarding the Toronto Maple Leafs in the nearly 100 years since they were founded. “Tales From the Toronto Maple Leafs Locker Room”, David Shoalts' entry into the “Tales From” series of sports books, takes a different approach from most other books in the series – he assumes that you've already heard all the “biggies”. Broadcasters Joe Bowen and (former goaltender) Glenn Healy also get their turn to look back, as do the Stellick brothers and others.All in all, this collection is one of the best in the series. Although I'm not a professional sound engineer, I very much enjoyed this book and have had fun tinkering with some software I've recently downloaded for my iMac. It really is amazing the differences that can be created with just a few modifications, as Mr. Clarke has pointed out in his useful guide. I can well imagine it would be very productive for someone with the proper equipment and a small studio.In terms of the writing and layout, I don't think he could have done a better job presenting his tips. The directions were even quite easy for me to follow - a total novice. I downloaded a copy when he had it available as a promotional item, but it would be worth the cost for anyone interested in sound recording and small studio work. This is a highly recommended product for amateur or pro. I've had fun with it.

I am in audio mixing for more than 10 years. I also love reading about mixing. I've read dozens of books. THIS ONE is special. It goes straight to the essence. Author has a real talent explaining things, getting straight to the point and making EVERYTHING very clear. For a beginner - it is a goldmine! For the advanced - it is very pleasant refreshening of a perspective! I knew most of tips. Nevertheless, there was something special in this book that made me love mixing even more and find anew techniques that I was already using. Therefore I wholeheartedly recommend this one to everyone in mixing business! :-)

I find these tip very helpful. The tips mentioned are in plain English so they're easy enough to understand and are short enough so you can just read about it and then go and put it into action.

The first thing to know about Amos Clarke is that his mixes are consistently well-balanced, detailed, spacious and punchy, so you can be confident that the techniques he shares in his latest book are well-worth incorporating into your own mixes. He’s made that easy by briefly describing each technique, why and when it’s useful, how it works, followed by a “Do It’ section that tells you precisely how to achieve it. It’s a winning format that’s just as punchy and illuminating as his mixes. Highly recommended.

Would recommend to anyone looking to add some easy to digest tips to getting interesting artistic sounds out of your recordings. I read the book on my kindle while riding the train in bits and pieces and can easily reference certain sections in my studio for trying out examples.

LOVED this book! What a great resource to have when mixing. I love how Amos gets right to the situation and his tips/procedures. This is a MUST HAVE for any mixer/producer who is trying to get over a hump, deal with a problem or wants to improve their mix. Would love to see one on Mastering or recording techniques.

Many ideas to try. Some are well known while others are new to this home recordist.

This book is absolutely perfect for those looking to design a garden from a perspective other than "pretty colors go well with pretty colors!"I'm not positive, but I would bet that this is often used as a textbook - either for landscape architects or other horticultural practices. It's a really fabulous book that teaches you so much about WHY to lay a garden out a certain way, and have it work complimentary to your home. Loads of information about the more technical aspects of garden design.The biggest pro is that the content is entirely approachable. I know almost nothing about landscape architecture or garden design, but nothing in this book was over my head or too difficult to understand. Absolutely a must have item for any serious gardener.

Just starting my journey of landscape design. I found this book to be a wonderful resource. It's (to my untrained eye) very thorough and complete. I like that it's a soft cover and I can keep it handy at poolside and it bends nicely in my backpack. Lots of information, cute little pen and ink drawings. So easy to follow and I think well organized as it leads you from one aspect into another naturally.

Good overview of garden design. Written largely from a British perspective but the principles are broadly applicable.

Very good basic understanding of how to organize and layout your design so if you want to show it a professional nursery, it is very understandable.

Very interesting. Lots of ideas for a person that approach the garden design for the fist time. I like it, but unfortunately I am an electronic engineer and I like very structured methods! Don't get me wrong: It is not complicated to undestand, very well written.

This is a very detailed, very technical book on planning every conceivable aspect of garden design. From fences to pergolas to hedges to ponds, it's all in here. Normally I love detailed books but this was actually a bit more technical than I had hoped for. It's almost like a textbook for professionals (which certainly isn't a bad thing).

We are in the process of designing a garden and this is the most helpful book we've found. The only drawback is that the author is from England and our garden is in South Carolina where the plants that will do well are very different.

About the Author Jeffrey S. Wilkinson is a professor of Journalism and Mass Communication at Houston Baptist University in Houston, Texas. Wilkinson is a specialist in international journalism with more than a decade teaching and researching mass media in China and Hong Kong. At United International College in Zhuhai he served two years as acting dean for the division of humanities and social sciences. He earned both his Master's and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia and areas of interest include Web journalism, video applications, writing, and reporting. Before that, he worked in radio and television news as a reporter, presenter, and talk show host.August E. ("Augie") Grant is J. Rion McKissick Professor of Journalism at the University of South Carolina. Grant is a technology futurist who conducts research, teaches, and writes regarding convergent journalism, media technologies, audience behavior, and media organizational behavior. Grant created the Communication Technology Update and Fundamentals series, The Convergence Newsletter, and the Newsplex Summer Seminars. He earned his M.A.J.C. at the University of Florida and his Ph.D. from the Annenberg School at the University of Southern California, and serves as a consultant to media and high-tech organizations.Douglas J. Fisher is a senior instructor at the University of South Carolina where he specializes in editing, new media, and community journalism. He spent 30 years as a broadcast, newspaper, and wire service journalist and is a former Associated Press news editor. Despite the 3 star review, I actually really liked this book. I had been looking forward to reading it for a while. The issue I had with the book can be illustrated by her performance|growth model. She spends a lot of time talking about the extremes but hardly any time talking about managing the middle, which is where probably 80% of managers really struggle with their direct reports!! I kept going back and scanning the pages again, thinking that I missed it. I could see a whole other book about that particular piece, and hopefully Scott will explore it further in a second edition. There were other similar gaps like that in the book - parts that I felt were explained so well at the extremes but things left unexplored, for example: companies whose culture is somewhere in the middle, managers who are dealing with performance in the middle, team dynamics somewhere in the middle. That "middle" is the tough part - how do you use Radical Candor to know when to pull the trigger on what when you're in a gray zone?

I hardly write reviews for books, but this one is worth the read. I'm only half way through and she's brought so much clarity to my management failures and triumphs. I now understand the things that made me fail my first time around and successful my subsequent times around. And now that I have a framework to understand, I feel like I can build a team that reflects accordingly.Good times. Thanks Kim. Is it too passive aggressive for me to give my current manager a copy of this book?

I've been at Google for 11+ years and much of what Kim talks about in the book resonated with me as a manager. This book as opposed to others I've read in the past has a ton of actionable guidance. I'm already looking for ways to apply many of the teachings from the book to my work. Especially the topics around Superstars and Rockstars hit home with me. Just today my team and I talked about how we could reward our Rockstars better. I also really like how Kim talks about the importance of being "centered" and how it's hard to be a good manager without being in a good place yourself.

A good read. Frankly some of the "bad" manager verbal assault on subordinates is a hard to believe, but that is what this book is written for. The basic thought on this book evolved around a. BUILD TRUST with your team. Them of you and you of them. It is the gateway to having foundational human relationships. Then b. BE CANDID with them (and them with you as the boss). Some good simple tips to focus on the activity, or the "it" - - NOT the person. The book was a little "round and round" on these two key points. A great read for anyone considering starting a company or for managers everywhere.

As with many books in this genre, this one was helpful occasionally, too specific most of the time (expect to get nothing from the middle chapters if you aren’t in a tech firm), often self contradictory (“no one is a top performer” but a few pages later “reward your top performers”), and a quick read. I am glad I read it and I definitely took away some useful tidbits. Unfortunately, I think the key notions and examples could have been just as easily communicated in a blog post. I’m a little shocked the author has formed a whole company around this concept as it’s fairly simple. Tips about how to phrase feedback were especially useful, and many anecdotes were enjoyable. The text was, however, undermined by some baseless ageism (‘millennials do this or that’), needless repetition, and a little too much namedropping for my taste.

So I bought this book thinking I was buying “Fierce Conversations”. Turns out I was buying the wrong book - which turned out to be the best mistake I ever made because this book is way way better! This is hands down one of the best books I have read on leadership. The author takes a straight shooter, no nonsense, no BS, no pontificating approach to how to be a kick a$$ Manager! It’s great for leaders of all levels and walks through some foundational things (in a no nonsense way that doesn’t make you feel stupid) and then gets into how to actually establish trust with your direct reports. As in “say this” and “do this”. It is a very practical guidebook. I used an entire highlighter on every nugget I found - some pages are entirely highlighted!I will recommend this book to anyone I know. It is by far the most practical advice on getting things done, without leaving bodies in your wake.

When I read a comment like this is the "holy grail of management books", I have to scratch my head. This is a rehash of material covered in countless other management books. I would have expected better from someone with her resume!You can learn more from several of the Patrick Lecioni books and they are more fun to read. About halfway through the book, I stopped and donated to the library. This is suitable for a newer manager to read.

This is a story of survival in the Artic. In the early 20th century the author sailed as navigator on an ill fated voyage into the Artic. The ship became locked in ice and eventually the author (of the dairy detailing this story) left the ship with several other men to try to reach islands to their south from which they might be rescued. They had a very rough go of it to say the least with bad ice, lack of food and necessities and attacks by polar bears and walrus. At times the story did seem to become somewhat repetitious with their hardships and could be a bit depressing and a bit long. But after all the hardships and disappointments the author and his companion were taken aboard a ship and got back to Russia. The story was well written. The characters were generally developed. For the most part the editing was good. There were some annoying run togethers in this Kindle version, especially in the earlier parts of the book, for example "before meto revealed" for :before me to reveal" The intended line was generally obvious with a 2nd look but could be initially confusing especially when the run together occurred at a line break.

This is an incredible tale of survival, written in a spare style so appropriate to the setting. Picture this: it is 1913 and your ship has been stuck in Arctic ice for over a year, drifting with the floe further north each month. Fearing that you will not escape this icebound existence in the coming year, you decide to get some of your more hardy shipmates together and try to walk to land across the frozen Arctic Ocean, carrying over a month's worth of supplies by sledge and some handmade kayaks to make the final crossing to land. Besides the arduous task of dragging yourself and supplies across the ice, you and your crew face blizzard conditions, polar bears, surprisingly dangerous walruses, malnutrition, and all sorts of surprising challenges (including the dangers of vitamin A poisoning from eating polar bear liver - warning to the wise). Knowing that this is a true story makes it all the more compelling. I read this book every time the winter weather gets me down, just to remind myself that things could be worse than suffering through a week with the Polar Vortex. Highly recommended.

The story is during the years just prior to the First World War, so it's quite a few years later than most Arctic stories. The crew are sailing the seas to the north of Russia; looking for faster trade routes, similar to the searches for the Northwest Passage expeditions in North America. Like most of these stories, the ship and crew were woefully unprepared, ignorant of any Arctic lore, and huge personality clashes made even good days difficult. After abandoning ship and crossing the ice for months, there was one wrong-headed move after another., which creates a lot of nail-biting incidents. It's written in diary style and is quite an easy and interesting read.

This is a different breed of polar literature. "In the Land of White Death" has none of the operatic heroism and tragedy that permeates polar classics like "The Worst Journey in the World", "Mawson's Will", or "Endurance". Albanov was under no illusions of grandeur: the party he was a member of were simply looking for new hunting grounds, and Albanov is keenly aware that if they die out on the ice it will be inglorious, miserable, and pointless, helping nobody and in service of nothing.This brutal lack of sentimentality is what makes "In the Land of White Death" so unique and so important in the polar canon. Albanov continually rages against the men under his leadership for their stupidity, laziness, and treachery. His writing is honest, direct, terse, and immensely readable. In fact, this is probably the only great polar story that could be read in a long day or a couple afternoons.Many of those who died during the "golden age" of polar exploration were revered as national heroes. When the bodies of S. A. Andrée and his crew were returned to Sweden in 1930 after an absurd attempt to hot air balloon to the North Pole, the streets were packed with one of the biggest acts of public mourning in the nation's history. History has been far less kind to these explorations; what was once seen as bravery is now often viewed as hubris and startling incompetence. "In the Land of White Death" captures all of that long before historians had a chance to reevaluate polar literature. Albanov writes with an emotional clarity that was decades ahead of its time.
